On May 22, 2001, the director of the Division of Higher Education, Paris, signed the agreement between the UNESCO and University of Khartoum for the established of the chair and approved nomination by the University. However, formal establishment was on August 1st, 2002 where the University of Khartoum approved hosting of the Desertification and Desert Cultivation Studies Institute (DADCSI) for the chair and simultaneously appointed Prof. Mukhtar Ahmed Mustafa as the chair-holder
